Welcome!
In 1909, President William H. Taft set aside the Oregon Caves National Monument for its “unusual scientific interest and importance.” To more clearly communicate this scientific interest, the National Park Service has compiled this encyclopedia, in partnership with Geocorps of America.
Each National Park Service site is designated by a four-letter acronym, usually the first four letters of the site's name. In cases where a site has two names, the first two letters of each word make up the acronym. Using this system, Oregon Caves National Monument is referred to as ORCA.
ORCApedia is meant for anyone who wants to learn more about the Oregon Caves. It includes an introduction to geology, as well as a more in-depth look at the specific geologic processes that shaped the region. There is also a room-by-room guide of the cave, following the same tour route taken by visitors and National Park Service rangers today.
